Youths make up a significant portion of the Solomon Islands demography and of those that are eligible to vote. Although youth like women, are more likely to have a very different experience of elections than men, their importance to the electoral process and national elections has not gone unnoticed by the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC).
The SIEC is looking at ways of partnering with youth organisations to raise awareness of the important role that youths can play in terms of determining the outcome of national elections and in terms of participating in Solomon Islands’ democratic processes.
Benefits of Voting
Solomon Islands youth are often referred to as the future of Solomon Islands. In terms of numbers, the country’s youth have the potential to have a real impact on the outcome of elections due to their significant numbers.
As such, by participating in elections, youths can help choose candidates that have policies that reflect their future hopes and aspirations as young Solomon Islands citizens.
